The name in the storybooks and in My Own Book. The game voice knows the name Asher; other names use the iPad voice.
Birthday
The week of his birthday (the day and the six before it) brings a 🎂 party: his animals at a cake, a book in his name and a free party hat. Leave it blank for none.
School grade
For the one-minute reading check and the report's comparison with national norms. Move it up each August.
Show picture choices
Turn off when he can read without pictures.
Computer voice backup
Reads words and sentences you haven't recorded. Letter sounds use the built-in sound maker.
Weather and lighting
Sunset and night, fireflies, drifting leaves, rain.
Save battery
Half the fireflies and leaves, simpler light and glass, only the front trees sway, and no wind sound (the birds and crickets stay). Everything still works. Turn it off for the full look.

Game voice
One natural voice for every word, book and story — the same on every device. Your Voice Studio recordings still come first.
Device voice (backup)
Best installed voice is chosen automatically. For the most natural sound, download an Enhanced voice in iPad Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English.
Speed1.0×
Nature sounds
Soft wind, birds by day, crickets at night.
Read aloud with the microphone
Adds a "Say it" button on Read-it words. Needs HTTPS and internet on iPad.
Talk to me
A 🎤 Talk to me button in the crates: he answers out loud and the buddy listens. At home the NAS listens (server/README.md, "The listener"); anywhere else the iPad matches his voice to the answers; the browser's recogniser is the last resort. A misheard answer costs nothing: he taps instead. After some stories it asks what he thinks, never judged; his answers wait for you in Progress → 🎤 inbox.
Eyes-free
For the car: every question is spoken, listening starts by itself, one big button, and the next question comes by itself.
Microphone check
Spelling crates
How often a crate asks him to build the word from its sounds.
Fast track
Quick, right-first-time reads climb a word's ladder twice as fast, and a level he reads fluently opens the next one early.
Reading tier
Moves up on its own at 85% first-try accuracy over his last 20 goes (sooner with Fast track).
Play timer
The buddy yawns; nothing is taken away.
Daily reading goal
A ring fills as he reads; a finished book counts too. Missing it is fine.
